The Ultimate Guide to SEO

Being a brand strategist who dabbles in web design, there's no surprise that over the years I have had plenty of people ask me "what is SEO?", "How do I use SEO?" and "Should I know about SEO"? Everyone of them has had a look of befuddlement and shear confusion on their face whenever the topic is raised. They've all had the same thing in common: they want to know how and why SEO might be relevant to them and their business online.

This week I wanted to share with you a fool-proof guide to understanding SEO and provide you with a FREE checklist cheat sheet that can get you not only understanding SEO (and describe why the heck you need to be thinking about it anyway), but also get you implementing some simple strategies on your own website so you can see some positive results in website traffic and views.

Let's dive in...

What is SEO?
SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimisation" and in short is a way of optimising a website so it will rank well in search engines on the internet (Hello Google!)

Because the internet is such a busy place and almost every business has an online presence, there's no wonder we are all fighting to get the most eyeballs on our products and services. The reason SEO is so important: it could be the difference between people finding you and your website or not.

The one thing you need to know about SEO is this: Key words are your friends.

What does that mean? Key words are the descriptor words you would use when it comes to describing exactly what it is your business/products/services do. Think of a scenario when you would be searching for a service provider in your local neighbourhood. The first thing you do is type the KEY WORDS into the web search bar that are specific to the provider you are searching for. For example, if I'm searching for a plumber in my local area I'd be using key words such as "plumber" and "Gunnedah NSW". It's pretty simple, right?

In practice: On your website we need to ensure the "key words" that relate to your business/products/services are listed and written into your website content so when Google or another search engine scours the internet looking for your business, it can be easily found.

For the purposes of keeping this email "fool-proof" and discussing this in layman's terms (because I understand this may sound a lot like web babble to most), I've created a FREE WEBSITE CHECKLIST for you to download that will walk you through all the things you need to consider to ensure you are using SEO properly on your website.

And if you are still confused by this and need someone to walk you through this in more depth, please reach out. I am considering running a workshop (online + possibly in person) on this topic in the coming weeks if there's enough interest.
